Is There A Type Of Doctor That Deals With Genetics?

4

I’ve wanted to become a doctor since I was really little, I just don’t know what kind yet and lately I’ve gotten into genetics and the probability of offspring inheriting dominant or recessive genes. Is there a type of doctor for that?

Genetic counselors are not doctors but they work with families and patients and explain and teach them about the disorders, treatments, support groups, etc.
Medical Geneticists are MDs who see and treat patients with genetic disorders. Medical Genetics is usually a sub-specialty, and often tied in with Pediatrics or Ob/Gyn.

A geneticist. But this type of profession is more to do with research and counselling, and less to do with actually manipulating a person’s genetic makeup.

There are physicians who specialize in genetic diseases. I know a great doctor who is a pediatrician with a subspecialty in genetics. He also does genetic counseling for adults.
Research is fun too :)
